Nail Drill Bits Introduction Guide

Each nail drill bits you decide to use is crucial when putting together a nail art job. Every nail technician who performs machine manicures has his or her own preference for drill shapes and grit. When you choose a high quality product, not only you but your clients can feel the difference. Today we’ll look at carbide vs. diamond drill bits and talk about the differences and uses of each.

When starting a manicure with a manicure machine, first remove the gel nail polish from the previous manicure with a carbide nail drill bit. This is obviously different from soaking off the nail polish with acetone, which can lead to thinning of the nail as well as drying of the cuticle. In this batch of nail drill bits, shapes include traditional barrel, tapered barrel and others. Nail technicians can choose between single-cut or double-cut carbide tips to remove nail polish. Single-cut tips have a semi-vertical downward cut that best removes nail polish in one direction. The double cut carbide has cuts in both directions for smooth removal of nail polish in both directions. We prefer a double cut tapered cartridge bit similar to this carbide. The nail technician can also choose the strength of the nail drill abrasive, a stronger grit will remove polish faster. It is important not to touch the skin when using this type of bit at this point of the manicure, as this bit is used to remove cured gel nail polish and can damage the skin. It is also important to note that you do not have to remove the base layer of the gel nail polish and can keep it intact for the next manicure. Be very careful when using these bits as they may take away some nail pieces. Finally, please know what you are doing or seek professional guidance when using these bits.

Diamond nail drill bits are used specifically for treating the cuticle. They can be used in conjunction with traditional nail tools, such as cuticle nippers and scissors or these diamond bits may be the only tool used. Some of the most common shapes include:

Flame-shaped drill bits

Two categories exist within the flame shaped bits. One is the traditional elongated, narrow version of the flame bit, and the other is the flame “drop” type. They both have their own unique uses. They are both used to help lift the cuticle slightly from the nail plate, making it easier to remove and apply gel polish. This shape of drill is one of the most popular among nail technicians and is very versatile.

Spherical nail bits

Spherical nail bits are also the most popular type. The size of a spherical nail bit is usually measured in millimeters, with the working part ranging from 1 mm to 6 mm. This nail drill bit is used to remove cuticles after the gel polish has been removed, allowing the paper skin on the back edge of the finger to lift slightly from the nail plate and be removed.

Tapered Drill Bits

Tapered nail drill bits vary greatly in size and shape. As pictured, the smaller tapered nail art bits go all the way up to large cones like this one. This is also the preference of people who perform nail art. They are ideal for removing cuticles.

Grit size is very important and customer specific. There are three main options when choosing a grit to work with, namely fine, medium and coarse. It is important to understand the sensitivity of the nail grit to the client’s skin. As the grit gets harder, it is easier to remove nail polish or cuticles, but with the wrong grit or nail art drill, and some improper use, the skin can become sensitive and uncomfortable.

It is very important to properly clean your nail art drill between nail art use jobs. The process of cleaning, although simple, should not be skipped. It is important to thoroughly clean all nail tools, especially nail clippers, to stop the spread of any diseases or bacteria.
